Our hospital offers this cool program for mamas and babies where you go back the Tuesday after you were discharged to check to see how things are going during that first week. We happened to be discharged at 1 day postpartum, so this checkup was at a mere 3 days postpartum, and my milk had just come in the night before.
The checkup entails a short questionnaire, a basic set of questions to assess whether you might have postpartum depression, and a basic check of the baby.
It also included a weight check before and after a feeding. Considering my milk had just come in, and at 3 days postpartum is usually when a new Mom and baby would be discharged, we considered this Ryan's discharge weight, and he was 9lbs 6oz at that time (the same weight as Cashel when he was born). After the feeding, he had gained an ounce and was 9lbs 7oz, which was just on par for what we would expect for a 3 day old baby.
Another part of the checkup is to check to see if there are any questions or concerns with breastfeeding, which I had none at the time.
This is such a great new program! I wish I had it as an option after Cashel was born.
